Abstract

This dataset comprises multimission altimeter products, specifically multimission altimetry-derived cyclonic eddy trajectories in the South China Sea region (109°E-121°E, 3°N-23°N). These products are released by the Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data (AVISO) with the support of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). The eddy trajectories are derived from the "all satellites" constellation maps distributed by CMEMS. The dataset is intended for the study of ocean mesoscale eddies. It provides cyclonic eddies detected from multimission altimetry datasets, including information such as their location, time, amplitude, average speed, effective radius, velocity, and angle, spanning the altimetry period from 1993 to 2022. The spatial resolution of the data is 0.25° × 0.25°, with a temporal resolution of one day, stored in the CSV file format. The trajectory data contain 3,976 trajectories with 141,938 sampling points.

Instructions:

track: Trajectory identification number, expressed as ordinal.

time: Days since 1950-01-01 00:00:00 UTC time, measured in Days.

amplitude: Magnitude of the height difference between the extremum of Sea Surface Height (SSH) within the eddy and the SSH around the effective contour defining the eddy edge, measured in meters (m).

longitude: Longitude center of the best fit circle, expressed in Degrees East.

latitude: Latitude center of the best fit circle, expressed in Degrees North.

speed_average: Average speed of the contour defining the radius scale "speed_radius", measured in meters per second (m/s).

effective_radius: Radius of the best fit circle corresponding to the effective contour, measured in meters (m).

velocity: Velocity calculated based on the distance and time between each sampling point, measured in meters per day (m/day).

angle: Angle calculated based on the turning angle between each sampling point, measured in degrees per day (°/day).
