Abstract

Captured Zigbee packets during energy depletion attack experiments. DOI: 10.15783/t8mt-a674 (https://doi.org/10.15783/t8mt-a674)

This Carnegie Mellon University dataset contains Zigbee packets that were captured during energy-depletion attack experiments. More specifically, the contributors used Zigator to deploy two stand-alone WIDS sensors and capture Zigbee packets, while HiveGuard was used to archive the pcap files that were generated by the WIDS sensors. Each WIDS sensor corresponded to a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ that was equipped with an ATUSB in monitor mode. Four experiments were conducted to test four commercial Zigbee devices, each powered by a brand new CR2450 lithium battery, against an energy depletion attack that was launched by an ATUSB with modified firmware. This research was supported in part by the CyLab Security and Privacy Institute. More details about the setup of each experiment, as well as the keys that were used to encrypt and authenticate the captured Zigbee packets, can be found in the dataset.

These datasets are part of Community Resource for Archiving Wireless Data (CRAWDAD). CRAWDAD began in 2004 at Dartmouth College as a place to share wireless network data with the research community. Its purpose was to enable access to data from real networks and real mobile users at a time when collecting such data was challenging and expensive. The archive has continued to grow since its inception, and starting in summer 2022 is being housed on IEEE DataPort.
