Abstract

This dataset describes the daily mobility of buses in the urban area of Vannes (France) on a typical working day, and radio contacts between these buses, assuming different radio transmission ranges. IRISA / Université Bretagne Sud, DOI: https://doi.org/10.15783/qr0f-m304

This is a semi-synthetic dataset: the mobility of each bus has been produced by extracting the characteristics of the bus routes from OpenStreetMap , and combining these routes with the bus company's timetables (http://www.kiceo.fr, as of September 2017. The resulting mobility traceset (vbn_0) involves 60 buses covering the city, between 5:25 AM and 7:39 PM. These buses do not necessarily start and stop running at the same time. Besides, a few of them only run at specific periods during the day. These are typically school buses that transport students to school or back home. The mobility scenario therefore exhibits moderate churn, as the number of running buses is not stable over time. A video showing the buses running in the city is available at Based on the mobility traceset, radio contacts have been computed assuming transmission ranges of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 meters around each bus. For each transmission range considered, the resulting data that combine mobility information and contact information is available in a distinct tracet (e.g., vbn_500 for a transmission range of 500 meters).

notes :

The data provided in each traceset define a time-varying graph (TVG) whose nodes model buses, and whose edges model contacts between buses. This TVG is formatted according to the DGS file format described below.
Files using this format can be processed by the GraphStream library (https://graphstream-project.org), or by the LEPTON emulation platform (https://casa-irisa.univ-ubs.fr/lepton).
The DGS file format specification is available in https://graphstream-project.org/doc/Advanced-Concepts/The-DGS-File-Format.
Below are further details about how this format is used in this dataset:
- the timesteps are specified in milliseconds, starting at time 0.
- timestep values are specified relatively to a reference time, which is specified as graph attribute 'ref_time=19500000' (i.e., 05:25 AM).
- node coordinates are updated every second. They are specified as x and y attributes (cartesian coordinates expressed in meters).
- all node coordinates are specified relatively to a reference point whose coordinates are specified in the graph attribute 'area' (in the file header). The value of this attribute is of the form 'car:x,y,width, height:reflat, reflon', where (x,y) and (reflat, reflon) are the cartesian and geographical coordinates of the reference location point, and (width, height) determine the size of the area.
- each bus is identified as line-xx-yy, where xx is a bus line number (there are 11 bus lines), and yy is the bus number in that line

These datasets are part of Community Resource for Archiving Wireless Data (CRAWDAD). CRAWDAD began in 2004 at Dartmouth College as a place to share wireless network data with the research community. Its purpose was to enable access to data from real networks and real mobile users at a time when collecting such data was challenging and expensive. The archive has continued to grow since its inception, and starting in summer 2022 is being housed on IEEE DataPort.
